Probably because I am a HUGE butternut squash fan and I am incredibly lucky to live in Portugal where butternut squash is often available most of the year.

The only time it seems to go out of season is early summer and soon goes back into season by late August.

The Portuguese are not big on the air fryer and instead will enjoy butternut squash and pumpkin in soups and pasta dishes rather than as an alternative to French Fries.

It got me thinking that we all have our favourite way for enjoying butternut squash. That’s why I am kick starting this week with a week dedicated to butternut squash.

If you love butternut squash as much as me, then this week is dedicated to you.

People like my husband Dominic that overall hate it, then I recommend the air fryer recipes category and to explore for other recipes that include your own favourite foods.

How To Make Butternut Squash Fries Crispy?

The secret of making butternut squash fries crispy is to do three things:

  • Cook your butternut squash on two different temperatures – Butternut squash is a delicate vegetable to cook and two temperatures will stop mushy fries.
  • Stick to similar sizes – By making sure your butternut squash fries are a similar size will mean that they will cook equally. You will not be left with undercooked fries and overcooked fries in the same air fryer basket.
  • Remove fleshy bits of butternut squash – When you peel and chop a butternut squash you will often find softer very fleshy bits. These do not make good squash fries and should be reserved for another recipe.

FAQs

Why are air fryer fries not crispy? ›

It's essential that you spread the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket and that you leave a little space between each one. If they're too crowded, the potatoes will steam inside the air fryer, and they won't get crispy. In order to give them adequate space, you'll likely need to work in batches.

Why soak fries before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

Some advocate for spraying the drawer or rack inside the air fryer, and while it doesn't hurt, it's unnecessary.

Is squash good in the air fryer? ›

Soaking potatoes in water before air frying helps remove excess starch from the surface. This can result in crispier and more evenly cooked potatoes, as excess starch can cause them to stick together or become gummy during the cooking process.

What happens if you don't soak fries before frying? ›

The main reasons to cut the potatoes and pre-soak in water are: To allow the excess starches and sugars to be removed from the outer surface of the fry strips AND to keep the potatoes from browning prematurely from exposure to air. Covering in water helps the potato from turning a dark color.

Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer? ›

Air fryers work by circulating hot air, which originates at the bottom of the fryer. Lining it with foil can constrict the air flow and your food won't cook properly. If you are going to use aluminum foil in an air fryer, use a small amount in the bottom of the basket, making sure not to cover the food.

What is the secret to the air fryer? ›

Cook food in a single layer, in batches

The air fryer is all about — well — air. Meaning, you need to allow for good airflow to create all the browning and crisping the appliance was designed for. As such, you don't want to crowd the food in the basket too much, leaving space for the air to circulate.

Are butternut squash good for you? ›

Why won t my french fries get crispy? ›

Why are my french fries never crispy? ›
